The words to know before you're ever arrested.
What To Do
Stay calm; do not physically resist, even if you believe the arrest is wrong.
Say out loud that you're invoking your right to remain silent.
Ask for a lawyer right away — then stop talking.
Do not answer questions or sign anything without a lawyer.
Afterward, once you're released, write down the badge numbers, names, and what happened.
Your Rights
You have the right to remain silent.
You have the right to a lawyer.
If you cannot afford one, a lawyer can be appointed.
Anything you say can be used against you.
You Can Say
"I am invoking my right to remain silent."
"I want a lawyer."
